AMHERST \u2013 There was a sense of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu among the some of the more one hundred who gathered in an empty space in the $160 million life science building <\/a>to celebrate the official opening of the occupied other half.<\/p>\n

In June, many of the same people gathered for an announcement that Gov. Deval L. Patrick had awarded a $95 million<\/a> to outfit this part of building over the next two years.
\nThe building was left as a shell so it could be equipped as research initiatives were developed.<\/p>\n

\u201cDidn\u2019t we do this before,\u201d said UMass Board of Trustee chairman Henry M. Thomas III, of the speakers at the celebration and ribbon cutting.<\/p>\n

But he then praised the opening of the other half that provides research space for graduate students and faculty. \u201cI\u2019m very proud of this great campus,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

UMass Cuts Ribbon to $160m Life Science Laboratories Building<\/a> UMass officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of phase one of the $160 million Life Science Laboratories building.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

In extolling the building\u2019s official opening, Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy<\/a> said, \u201cthe future is being shaped today.\u201d The building allows for faculty cluster groups who are working on similar issues to work near each other and greater collaboration.\u201cIt belongs to no one department,\u201d he said. The research space opened in August.<\/p>\n
