Welcome to the Chien lab at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology!

We are an interdisciplinary lab focused on understanding regulated protein degradation and quality control using biochemistry, structural biology, and cell biology. Our primary techniques use molecular and cellular approaches to understand proteolysis based mechanisms that lead to specific substrate processing during basic cellular events. We draw from several disciplines, including biochemistry and microbiology.

Our lab is always interested in enthusiastic students of all levels who are motivated to understand fundamental and biological questions. We are part of the MCB graduate program, the Chemistry-Biology Interface Program, Biotechnology Training Program, and the Institute for Applied Life Sciences here at UMass-Amherst. See the links below for more detailed information, or feel free to contact us if you have questions that aren’t addressed.

Protein degradation is an essential process for all biological life. Damaged or improperly folded proteins need to be cleared from the cell before they elicit toxic effects. Regulatory proteins need to be degraded so that the response they support exists only as long as it is necessary. However, as proteolysis is an irreversible event, great…
